Throughout Hearing Health Awareness Month, I have been spreading the word about why people across Key West should get regular hearing consultations.

Many believe that this isn’t necessary because they can still hear or haven’t noticed an issue.

However, any form of hearing loss, if left untreated, can lead to social and physiological problems, which can impact your quality of life.

Only a doctor of audiology, with years of experience, can diagnose the first signs of a hearing loss. But not many people know what happens at their first appointment.

This is what you can expect when you come for a consultation with me.

An open dialogue

When you first step into my office, I’ll want to know why you felt it was time for a hearing consultation. This will let me personalize your experience moving forward.

Some may want to find out if they have a hearing loss after years of amazing experiences.

Others have noticed that they can’t hear clearly in certain conditions or have been advised by a family member to seek professional assistance.

There are no wrong answers, so feel free to say exactly what’s on your mind.

I’ll also ask you about your medical record and whether anyone in your family had a hearing loss, for contextual purposes.

In addition, I’ll want to know more about your lifestyle and day-to-day experiences, as they can provide clues to the origin of a condition.

The hearing tests

After I have all these personal details, the next step will be to examine your ears with a full evaluation.

This will take place in the sound booth, where I’ll conduct diagnostic tests to accurately determine your ability to interpret different noises.

After putting on some headphones, you’ll initially hear a series of beeps, which will decrease in volume and harshness.

All you’ll need to do is press a button when you hear a sound, with this test revealing the threshold of your hearing capacity.

Next, I’ll ask you to repeat certain words and phrases in the presence of background noises.

This will demonstrate how well your brain is processing speech in different environments.

The results and solutions

Your test results will be available instantly, and I’ll use them to provide you with a clear picture of your hearing health and any potential conditions.

Following this, I’ll set aside time for questions and answer session, where you are free to ask pressing questions about anything hearing related.

Listening is an incredibly important part of the consultation, and I make sure you’re given every chance to put your queries and worries forward.

If you’re a great candidate for hearing aids, we’ll look at tailored treatment options, with your lifestyle, prescription, and level of investment in mind.

And if your evaluation reveals that you could benefit from a medical procedure, and I can also provide you with a referral for an ENT physician.

Want to find out more? I’m always happy to talk to people about their concerns. So give me a call, and I’ll let you know about the best steps to take going forward.

Do you know somebody that needs to see this? Why not share it?
